Capitals, Lightning wear special helmet decals for victims of airline crash

The Washington Capitals will be wearing special helmet decals to honor the victims of the tragic aircraft crash at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in January.

Sixty-seven people were killed when an Army helicopter collided with a commercial airliner and crashed into the Potomac River on Jan. 29. Twenty-eight members on board were members of the figure skating community.

The Capitals are featuring the decals on the left side of their helmets for their game Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning, who have also chosen to wear the special tribute.

The decal features a hockey skate and figure skate facing each other with the date "1.29.25" inside of a heart.

“I think for our community in the DMV and what’s gone on here as close as it hits for us an organization," Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said. "It’s just another way just to really show our support 30 days later of what went on and to all the people that were affected by it, families, loved ones, just another way for both teams today to show our support. We’re there for our community.”

On Sunday, Capital One Arena will host a star-studded figure skating tribute that will raise funds to support the families and loved ones affected by the tragedy.
